Chapter 23

The first puncture stung, but the pain quickly melted away leaving a tingling sensation in its wake. It was an odd feeling but all of her fear dissipated as soon as he’d done it. This wasn’t half as bad as she’d been imagining. It was actually, dare she say, pleasurable. She felt connected to him in that moment as she’d never been to anyone before. She could feel the blood leaving her body, but it only warmed her heart to know that she was helping him. This was in no way as gory or violent as it was in ‘Bound in Blood.’ Those vampires really went to town on their victims, even the ones they left alive would be permanently scarred.

She let her eyes flutter closed and her head fall back as she enjoyed the sensations it was sending around her body. She was even sure a soft moan escaped her lips at one point but she was too lost in the moment to care. The tingling crept around her body, as little bubbles seemed to pop around her head, making her light-headed and dizzy. Her knees shook below her as she started to lose feeling in them. She felt her legs give out and the sensation of falling, but there was no thud. There was no pain. Perhaps she had just ascended to a higher plane of existence.

“Harper.”

Oh, and Kaleb was here too. That was great.

“Harper!”

She shook violently, her eyes finally focussing. She hadn’t ascended anywhere. In fact, she was closer to the floor than she had been before. Kaleb’s dreamy blue eyes looked wild and concerned. His strong arms wrapped around her, holding her against him just a few inches off the ground. His rock hard chest pressed against her own, reigniting the ghost of the tingly feelings. He lifted her up as if she weighed no more than a bag of sugar and placed her gently on the cold gurney.

It was only as her skin collided with the harsh cold metal that her brain finally reanimated and she started to piece together what had actually happened. She’d become delirious from blood loss and ultimately fainted. Kaleb had caught her before she smashed her head open on the floor, but couldn’t be given too many props as he was the one who had caused it in the first place. Her stomach churned and her head spun as she tried to sit up.

“I’ll get you some water, stay still,” Kaleb told her, he couldn’t have looked more guilty if he had tried. All she wanted to do was tell him that it wasn’t his fault, but she feared if she opened her mouth the only thing that would come out would be vomit. He disappeared in a whoosh of air and was back as quick as a flash. Again, the speed thing was not something she could get used to especially not with an already spinning head.

“Here,” he handed her the small plastic cup filled with clear liquid.
